The Betrayal of WisDems Against Hong
When we look at the governor’s election in Wisconsin, the story begins with many Democrats entering the race early. Our movement Nefesh joined a little later. The central figure in this fight was activist Alexandria Clare, who quickly infiltrated several PACs as well as Tom Tiffany’s campaign to gain visibility into what was really happening behind the scenes.
At first, the election was clearly leaning toward Hong. She was ahead of Tom Tiffany, and many people rallied behind her especially because of her strong stance against the data center projects. She was a powerful opponent to the Republican Party, and, without question, the best choice Wisconsin had. She was supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, and her message resonated with everyday people.
But corporate greed and the influence of large tech companies shifted the race. These corporations threw their support behind another candidate who had dropped out, then suddenly rejoined: David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive. The Democratic Party burned through three‑quarters of its budget fighting against the Democratic Socialists of America, who had only one‑hundredth of the resources the DNC used against Hong. And because of horrific attacks, blatant media lies, and smear campaigns, Hong ultimately lost the election to David Crowley.
Crowley is not projected to win Wisconsin. In fact, he is likely to lose to Tom Tiffany. This is not just a blow to the Democratic Socialists of America; it is a blow to the many people and minorities who will now have to bear the brunt of a conservative regime in Wisconsin.
Added on, many trans folks now face two governors who will not be favorable to them. Yes, Crowley is marginally better than Tiffany, but he is no ally to the trans community. He does not plan to defend trans rights. He does not plan to protect trans women’s access to women’s spaces or their right to live authentically. And with the ongoing propaganda harming trans lives across the state, Crowley has already made it clear he will not take a strong stance orn trans issues and well with ICE. He intends to work with the federal government, and his only disagreement with the President is that ICE must follow state law if they operate here. He does not believe in abolishing the institutions that are actively causing harm .
Crowley versus Tom Tiffany represents the core problem the Democratic Party faces again and again: choosing a “conservative‑lite” candidate instead of embracing true progressives. They follow corporate interests instead of the will of the people. And the people want change. They want free healthcare. They want free university. They want to take their children to parks without fear. They want wages that allow them to buy a home, raise a family, and build a future. But under the current capitalist regime, that future feels increasingly out of reach.
Yes, the economy often performs better under Democratic leadership but the party still struggles to address national debt, manufacturing, fair wages, and the velocity of the money supply. They struggle to build sustainable projects that meet the material needs of the masses. The Democratic Socialists of America do have answers. Their solutions may seem “cringe” to some, but history has proven them right. Yet the Democrats refuse to listen. They cater to their corporate overlords and will side with the chains of fascism if it means stomping out the populist left no matter how many people support progressive policies.
You don’t burn through three‑quarters of your budget because you want to win against Republicans. You burn through it to crush socialists and protect corporate interests.
We can see the consequences of this kind of leadership in places like the Quad Cities home of Nefesh, where Tyson Chicken closed a major manufacturing plant. 1,500 jobs vanished overnight, and another 9,000 supply‑chain jobs disappeared with it. Ten thousand people without work. This is what Republican rule brings to states that once were blue, once were progressive And this is the future Wisconsin faces if Republicans win again.
But look at Iowa. Unlike Wisconsin’s corporate Democrats, the Iowa Democratic Party embraces its progressives and its democratic socialists. Leaders like Adam Peters and Rob Sand despite coming from different political backgrounds are working together. They are building a strong coalition to flip the state and win the Senate. I wish Wisconsin could follow that example. Time will tell. But right now, corporate Democrats here cannot seem to let go of that corporate money.
Even though many people in Iowa have lost jobs from Tyson’s closure to John Deere scaling back production the coalition is still growing. People are organizing. People are fighting.
And that is what we must do.
