NON‑COMMITTAL MAN: THE QUANTUM HERO OF IOWA 

( satire) 

A new superhero has emerged in Iowa one unlike any hero the Midwest has ever seen. He is known only as Non‑Committal Man, a being who exists in a perpetual quantum state: both real and not real, agreeing and disagreeing, present and absent, all at the same time. 

He never touches the ground. Because if he did, he might accidentally take a stand on something, and rumor has it that doing so would cause him to collapse into nonexistence. His greatest weakness is commitment itself. 

Recently, investigative journalists uncovered his secret identity: Rob Sand, a man whose last name is suspiciously symbolic. Sand shifts. Sand changes shape. Sand becomes whatever you mold it into. And so does he. 

At a climate rally, an angry crowd demanded justice. Corporations demanded deregulation. Non‑Committal Man descended from the sky, hovering three inches above the soil like a confused hummingbird. 

He faced the corporations first. 

“I thank you for your generous donations,” he said. “I believe we need more data centers, more cameras, and you might be right about… dogs voting.” 

The corporations nodded, unsure whether he was agreeing or politely hallucinating. 

Then he turned to the environmental activists. 

“I hear you,” he said. “I want justice. I want clean water. I want the things that some of you might want. But above all, we must listen to each other.” 

Everyone stared at him, waiting for a stance that never came. 

Someone in the crowd shouted, “What do you actually stand for?” 

Non‑Committal Man locked eyes with them or perhaps their neurons directly, because his quantum powers bypassed normal communication. His voice echoed inside their subconscious like a polite ghost. 

“I will listen to your thoughts,” he said. “And the corporations’ thoughts. And the fish. And the bees. And the bacteria in the soil.” 

The crowd was stunned. They had expected a clear position. Instead, they got a metaphysical TED Talk. 

Non‑Committal Man hovered higher, shimmering like Schrödinger’s cat in political form both a wave and a particle, both a candidate and not a candidate, both a stance and the absence of one. 

He is Iowa’s most confusing hero. He is the champion of all sides and none. He is Non‑Committal Man, forever floating above the issues, never landing long enough to choose one.
